What to Expect as a Volunteer

Community Service

 What Is Community Service? 


  • Hands-On Volunteer Work: Tasks can include building, painting, landscaping, cleaning on build sites, or assisting in Habitat ReStore and  in administrative offices.
     
  • Short-Term or One-Time Projects: Often a few hours to a day, though longer commitments are possible.
     
  • For Individuals or Groups: Open to students 

 What Is Community Service? 


  • Hands-On Volunteer Work: Tasks can include building, painting, landscaping, cleaning on build sites, or assisting in Habitat ReStore and  in administrative offices.
     
  • Short-Term or One-Time Projects: Often a few hours to a day, though longer commitments are possible.
     
  • For Individuals or Groups: Open to students fulfilling school or court-mandated community service hours, civic groups, or anyone looking to give back to the community.
     
  • Impactful Work: Every hour of community service contributes directly to building homes and strengthening communities.
     
  • Skill Development: Volunteers often learn basic construction, teamwork, and project management skills.


  • What to bring & wear: Bring water and a snack; wear outdoor/comfortable work clothes and closed-toe shoes

  • Group Volunteer Projects: Teams of employees, students, or community members work together on a construction or repair project.
     
  • Short-Term Commitment: Typically a day or a few days, rather than a long-term volunteer role.
     
  • Hands-On Construction: Volunteers might do tasks like framing, painting, landscaping, installi

 What Are Team Builds?


  • Group Volunteer Projects: Teams of employees, students, or community members work together on a construction or repair project.
     
  • Short-Term Commitment: Typically a day or a few days, rather than a long-term volunteer role.

Build Homes

  • Volunteer on active construction sites helping to build safe, affordable homes
  • Tasks may include framing, painting, siding, landscaping, and cleanup (no experience required)
  • Work alongside future homeowners, skilled crew leaders, and other community volunteers
  • Volunteer hours: Tuesdays and Thursday

What is Individual Volunteering?

  • Work alongside future homeowners, skilled crew leaders, and other community volunteers
  • Volunteer hours: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 7:30 AM – 12:00 PM
  • What to bring & wear: Bring water and a snack; wear outdoor/comfortable work clothes and closed-toe shoes


  • ReStore Volunteering
    • Support Habitat ReStores by assisting with donation intake and merchandising
    • Help customers on the sales floor and maintain an organized, welcoming store environment
    • Volunteer hours: Tuesday–Saturday, 9:00 AM – 4:30 PM
    • What to wear: Any appropriate, comfortable clothing suitable for light lifting and movement


  • Office & Administrative Support
    • Assist with data entry, filing, and organizing volunteer or donor records
    • Help with mailings, phone calls, and other day-to-day operations that keep Habitat running smoothly
    • Volunteer hours: Tuesday–Friday, 9:00 AM – 4:30 PM
    • What to wear: Business casual attire
